How We Build
The JHL Quality Standard
Every deck we build follows the same process, uses the same material standards, and carries the same warranty. There's no "budget tier" and no corner-cutting. Quality is the only product we sell.
Our 7-Step Build Process
Every JHL deck goes through the same process — from the first site visit to the final inspection sign-off. No steps skipped, no surprises.
Free On-Site Consultation
We come to your property. We walk the yard, assess grade and elevation, discuss your goals, and answer every question you have — before any money changes hands. No showroom visit, no zoom call, no salesperson. The person who shows up for the estimate is the person who builds your deck.
Detailed Written Quote
You receive a full line-item quote: materials by brand and grade, labor, permit fees, demo costs if applicable, and our workmanship warranty terms. No vague ranges, no "call for pricing." You know exactly what you're paying for before you sign anything.
Permit Filing
We file the permit. We attend the pre-construction inspection if required. We handle plan review questions from the township. In Chester County and Delaware County municipalities, permit processing typically takes 2–4 weeks — we factor this into your timeline from day one.
Material Procurement
We source materials only after permit approval. We don't order early and rush — we order right. Every material is specified in your quote: decking brand and grade, hardware specs, concrete mix for footings. What you approved is what gets delivered.
Construction
Our crew arrives on time, works clean, and communicates daily. Footings are poured to depth, framing is square and plumb, decking is installed per manufacturer spec. You're welcome on site at any point — we don't hide the work.
Inspection & Sign-Off
We schedule and attend the final township inspection. If an inspector finds an issue — rare, but it happens — we fix it before we call the project complete. You receive a copy of the passed inspection record for your home file. That document is worth real money when you sell.
Final Walk-Through
Before we leave your property, we walk the finished deck with you. We show you how to care for the material you chose, explain the warranty terms, and leave you with contact information for any questions that come up after we're gone. The job isn't done until you're satisfied.
What We Build With
Material quality determines how long your deck lasts. We spec by performance, not price — and we explain every choice before you commit.
Composite Decking
Trex, Azek, Fiberon
These three brands are the industry standard for quality and warranty coverage. We don't install off-brand composites — the warranty math doesn't work for our clients over time.
Pressure-Treated Lumber
#1 grade or better, code-compliant treatment level
We spec #1 grade PT for all structural framing. No #2 or "utility" grade on structural members — the code allows it; we don't.
Hardware & Fasteners
Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel throughout
Zinc-plated fasteners corrode in contact with treated lumber chemistry. We spec the right fasteners for the material — always.
Concrete (Footings)
Minimum 3,000 PSI mix, drilled to frost depth
Pennsylvania frost depth in Chester County is 36 inches. Footings that don't reach frost depth heave. Footings that heave fail inspections and damage structures.
Railing Systems
Trex Transcend, TimberTech, aluminum cable, glass panels
Railing is a structural component — it has to meet IRC load requirements. We install systems tested and rated to code, not cosmetic afterthoughts.
Our Warranty
Every JHL build carries our workmanship warranty. If something we built fails due to our workmanship — not weather, not acts of God, not normal wear — we come back and fix it.
On top of that, composite decking from Trex, Azek, and Fiberon carries 25–30 year manufacturer warranties on the product itself. We'll walk you through both warranties before you sign.
The warranty isn't a promise buried in fine print. It's a handshake from the people whose names are on this company.

Common Questions About Our Process
What warranty do you offer on deck construction?
JHL Deck Builders provides a workmanship warranty on every build. Material warranties are provided separately by the manufacturer — Trex, Azek, and Fiberon all offer 25–30 year warranties on their products. We'll walk you through both before you sign.
Do you pull permits for every deck?
Yes, without exception. Every deck we build is permitted through the appropriate Chester County or Delaware County municipality. We handle the full permit process — application, plan submission, and inspections.
Are you licensed and insured in Pennsylvania?
Yes. JHL Deck Builders holds a Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration and carries general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Certificates of insurance are available upon request.
Can I be on-site during construction?
Absolutely. We're not running anything we need to hide. You're welcome to check in at any point during the build. We also provide daily updates on progress and any schedule changes.
What happens if something fails after the deck is built?
Call us. Our workmanship warranty means we come back and fix anything that failed due to our work — period. For material defects, we assist you with the manufacturer warranty process.
